No doubt, the koala is Australia's most loved animal. A koala may look like your Teddy Bear - so many people call it a koala bear. The little fellow speaks little English but the last time it had a chat with Dr Doolittle, it was quite indignant about this misnomer. "I am a vegetarian marsupial" it said; "not a hibernating carnivore. I live in trees, and just in case you doubt by credentials, have a look at my family tree:".

  • Kingdom: Animal (I am not a vegetable !)
    • Phylum: Vertebrata (I have a back bone - unlike snails and crabs)
      • Class: Mammillae (I feed my babies milk)
        • Sub-Class: Marsupialia (My joeys live in a pouch)
          • Order: Diprotodontia
            • Sub-Order: Vombatiformes (I am related to wombats)
              • Infra order: Phascolarctomorphia
                • Family: Phascolarctidae
                  • Genus: Phascolarctos (pronounced fas'-koh-lark-'tos which means "pouched-bear"
                    • Species: cenereus

"What a pedigree! I reckon you might call me Sir, thank you very much! And since I live in trees, you might as well throw in Your Highness, Sir Koala the Great!"
